PNG Rugby Football Union is working towards developing the game with its junior rugby programs targeting the upcoming U20 Oceania Championships scheduled in 2015.PNGRFU general manager Alan Manning has confirmed that PNG will be participating at the U20 Oceania Championship in March next year.He announced this after recently attending the Federation of Oceania Rugby Union (FORU) annual general meeting in Tahiti.He said that PNGRFU is strongly embarking on these junior rugby programs to build and prepare the young school kids/players for the U20 championships.The three major junior rugby programs becoming popular among schools in the country are Pacific In Union, Scrum Rugby and the new Get Into Rugby program.The Pacific in Union program, headed by in-country manager Frank Genia, has already been rolled out in four main targeted centres.They include pilot centre Port Moresby, Rabaul, Goroka and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville where the program is progressing well.There are already a good number of schools taking up the PiU program. This year, PiU has involved a few more schools in Port Moresby, increasing the number of participants for both male and female.Meantime, while the PiU continues to reach out to other schools in Port Moresby and the four other targeted centres, ‘Get Into Rugby’ is about to make its break on the Aroma Coast.Get Into Rugby is another initiative of the International Rugby Board (IRB) and mainly targets kids aged as young as 6 year olds to 17 year olds.It has already been introduced in Daru, Lae and is targeting the following in the next few months; Tabubil, Kimbe, Madang, Mendi.After successfully rolling out the program in Morobe and Western provinces in the past two months, Get Into Rugby is set to hit villages along the Aroma Coast starting from Lalaura going all the way to Kupiano Station, Gavuone, Wairavanua, Maopa and Paramana.More emphasis has been placed on junior development and junior rugby for both male and female as it is the pathway to preparing elite athletes for bigger tournaments like the 2015 Pacific Games and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
